Member Survey 2009

The Outdoor Industries Association (OIA) has completed a survey of its members, identifying views on a range of topics, along with the key issues facing outdoor businesses in 2009. Responses were received from across the sector and included a strong representation from retailers, suppliers, distributors, activity/holiday providers and clubs/associations, providing a good indication of opinions from the whole industry.

In the survey, members were asked to identify the most relevant and important areas of association work. Market research and the promotion of the outdoors to a wider audience were cited as the most important OIA activities, followed by providing access to information and services on the OIA website, and the provision of workshop events and seminars. Other areas that were highlighted by a significant number of respondents include staff training and retail accreditation, initiatives relating to sustainability, promoting careers in the outdoors, providing a range of benefits and discounts to members, and lobbying and legislative issues.

Members also identified the key issues that are facing them in the current climate. Top of the list are currency related matters, followed by increased overheads/costs, rising prices, tightening credit and customer footfall. The survey also asked a range of other questions, including how members would like to receive future communications from the OIA – on that point, 96% of respondents expressed a preference for email.

Louise Ramsay, OIA director, comments:
“I am delighted with the response to this survey, both in the number of replies we received and the broad cross section of the industry that they represent. The results add weight to the many individual meetings and conversations I have had with members and potential members. Clearly, the strategy that the OIA has established over the last year and a half is the right one and our plans for 2009 and beyond will continue to deliver robust market research, improved promotion of the outdoors to many audiences and enhanced communications across traditional and non traditional platforms.

“There are clearly some very specific issues that organisations operating in the sector are facing at this particular time and I plan to develop some short to medium term actions that can play a role in addressing those. In particular, the OIA is going to collaborate where possible with other organisations in the UK that share aspects of our agenda. However, many of the challenges we need to address are global in nature, so we will also seek to work closely with organisations such as the European Outdoor Group and the USA Outdoor Industry Association.”

To thank members for taking time to complete the survey, the OIA ran a prize draw of a weekend for two at Glenmore Lodge National Outdoor Centre. The happy winner of that is Alec Rycroft of The Walking Shop in Leyburn, North Yorkshire. Congratulations to Alec and thanks to everyone who responded to the survey.

New services and fees for 2009

Membership renewal packs for 2009 will be delivered to OIA members during June. This coincides with the association’s confirmation of significantly enhanced benefits and services. In addition, recognising that the economic climate is particularly challenging at the moment, the OIA is also introducing a ‘pay what you can’ scheme for members that renew for 2009/10, along with an introductory flat rate subscription of £100 for organisations who decide to sign up as new members this year.

Association director Louise Ramsay, backed by the OIA Council, has developed the enhanced services and benefits that the association now offers. These include: free legal advice on employment, contract and commercial law, tax and payroll issues, and health and safety; discounts and preferential rates on a range of business solutions such as printing, online activities, media planning and buying, and marketing; support and representation at trade shows; and free recruitment advertising on OIA platforms.

Other developments that will go live in the next few months include an interactive website that will include facilities and functions such as a members only area offering access to research, toolkits and podcasts, all developed to help companies grow their businesses. The site will also host up to date information and news on issues affecting the industry, as well as a careers area. The OIA will soon launch financial services, including preferential credit card processing and insurance rates. And later in the year, the association will introduce the first of a series of business workshops, which will provide up to date guidance on areas such as supply chain, health and safety, human resources and marketing. OIA members will be able to attend those events at discounted rates.

The enhanced services sit alongside existing and ongoing membership benefits. The OIA continues to deliver market research, campaign and lobby on behalf of the outdoor sector, promote the outdoors to a wider audience and drive consumers to specialist retailers and activity providers.

All OIA members will be receiving their renewal packs in the near future, which will contain full information about services and benefits, and the ‘pay what you can’ scheme.
Calling all Retailers

Following a number of requests regarding insurance cover for retailers, we are investigating the possibility of setting up an insurance ‘scheme’ to cater for the needs of the retail sector of the Outdoor Industries Association.

In order to gather relevant information that will enable such a scheme we would ask that the enclosed questionnaire be completed by as many retailers as possible. Once this information has been collected we can begin to build a policy that meets as many of the requirements as possible and cost it accordingly.

Can you please complete the attached questionnaire and return it to Louise Ramsay by Monday 27th July

outdoor questionnaire.doc
Members vote to incorporate at AGM

Members vote for better governance of the new OIA

Members at last week’s AGM unanimously voted to incorporate the OIA in order to ensure the association moves forwards on a more formal, well established footing. The new structure will mean greater protection for members as well as better governance and greater accountability.

At the last Council meeting in June, the Council agreed that it would be in the best interest of the OIA for it’s structure to be updated, and incorporate to become a company limited by guarantee.

Most associations these days are incorporated due to the increasing liabilities associated with legal compliance and employment and property contracts. As the OIA is currently not a legal entity in it’s own right (i.e does not exist independently of its members) it therefore cannot enter into any contracts in its own right. This means that currently all council members are required to be named in contracts and are accordingly responsible for meeting the conditions – and liabilities – of any contract and consequently are exposed personally. Members are also not protected from any debts owed due to insolvency.

What are the benefits of incorporating?

Protecting members and council from legal and financial liability.

By making the association incorporated the company may own property, enter into contracts, sue and be sued in relation to contracts and other legal issues.

Better governance with full compliance to company law and the more efficient operation and running of the association.

Better accountability, offering all stakeholders the assurance that all activities and monies are being transparently reported and monitored.

Limitation of liability to members due to insolvency. A nominal fee of £1 would be incurred.

What is the next step?

Firstly setting up a new company.

Secondly transferring the assets of the OIA to the new company.

Transfer membership to the new company.

A new board of directors will be formed with responsibilities in line with company law.

The new constitution for the incorporated OIA

The main changes occurring as a result of incorporation will happen around the governance and legal structure, which involves replacing the current governing document with a new one which is the memorandum and articles of association, as put together in consultation with legal advisors Bates, Wells and Braithwaites.

The main changes can be summarised as follows:

Many points from the current constitution are not included in the new constitution as they are dealt with by company law and therefore are not included.

Further policy documents can be created and adopted by company’s board from time to time.

The OIA picks up pace

The OIA held its 49th Annual General Meeting on 6th August at the NEC near Birmingham. Although attendance was limited, mainly due to the timing, those who were there not only represented a good cross section of the industry, but also brought valuable experience and contributions to the table.

During the course of the AGM two fundamental resolutions were passed to ensure the more efficient and effective running of the association in the future. First, the AGM voted to incorporate the OIA, which brings the organisation in line with most other comparable representative bodies, offering better governance, accountability and transparency while protecting the legal and financial liability of members and of Council. Second, an amendment to the existing constitution as an interim measure was approved, allowing additional co-opted members to join the Council. This gives the Council greater scope to co-opt individuals to assist in specific projects and initiatives, or in the event that Council members retire or resign mid-term.

The AGM concluded with a presentation on the potential introduction of an OIA retail qualification for the industry. The objective of this would be to raise training standards across the board, as well as promote outdoor retail as a more aspirational and rewarding career path. The presentation sparked a healthy debate, which concluded in an overall agreement to form a working group to take this to the next stage which will be lead by Don Gladstone of Anatom.

In summary, the mood at the AGM was buoyant and positive – those attending endorsed the renewed objectives of the OIA and its aim to be an overarching organization for the outdoor industries. It was agreed that the association is still in the embryonic stages of its regeneration, but with a strong Board, a clear vision and the support of members, the feeling in the room was that it should be able to make swift and tangible progress.

Key to the long term health of the OIA will be building a strong membership base, with a broad representation of every part of the outdoor sector. To that end, the OIA has embarked on a sustained drive to retain members, regain those that have recently lapsed, and attract new members. That drive has two main elements: offering an improved suite of membership benefits and promoting those effectively; and for 2009/10, the introduction of a ‘pay what you can’ offer for renewing members, combined with a special one off flat rate fee for new members.

While membership benefits continue to be developed, there now already exists a healthy package that can potentially save members over £1,000. These benefits are aimed at all sectors of the industry, but are of particular value to small to medium sized businesses, and include a new online business support service provided through Croner. Looking at the bigger picture, the OIA is developing a major outreach programme, and is working with organisations as diverse as the BBC, UK Trade and Investment, the Central Council for Physical Recreation and the English Outdoor Council. Over time, the aim is to establish the OIA as the voice of authority on the outdoors in the UK and use that position to more effectively engage with and lobby government on issues and legislation that impact the sector. This objective has already received support from some of the larger organisations and businesses that are OIA members, and they will all have a role to play in its delivery.

Other projects underway include collaboration with the European Outdoor Group on sustainability issues, ongoing support of key industry initiatives such as Innovation for Extremes (exciting plans for the 2010 Innov_ex conference will be announced soon) and the Retail Employee of the Year scheme run by OCC Outdoor, and a continuation of the industry research programme with Peter Luscombe of Profile Outdoors. The second phase of the research was completed recently, with a full report due to be published (and provided free to all OIA members) in September.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:11.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:

Free Scholarships to the Oxford Retail Masters Forum

Skillsmart Retail and Retail Trust are once again offering OIA members who are retail managers a unique opportunity to benefit from over £2000 worth of high quality management training for FREE. Offered annually, these seven scholarships give fully-funded access to the British Shops and Stores Association’s (bssa) Oxford Retail Masters Forum, a four-day residential course which is widely regarded as one of the top retail management training programmes in the country. Running from 22nd -25th March 2010 at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, it gives retail managers the opportunity to work with and learn from some of the most talented retail experts.

The Oxford Retail Masters Forum enables delegates to:
· Enhance their understanding of the key drivers of business success
· Gain further insight into the interpretation and evaluation of business performance
· Examine the challenges of today’s highly competitive retail market and the opportunities of the future
· Develop strategies for improving the performance of their own business

The 2009 programme included speakers such as Phil Wrigley, Executive Chairman of New Look, Stephen Robertson, Director General of the British Retail Consortium and Alan Giles Chairman of Fat Face. The 2010 programme is currently being developed and BSSA are delighted to confirm that Theo Paphitis, Chairman of Ryman Stationery and star of BBC TV’s Dragons’ Den programme, will be the guest speaker on Entrepreneurism.

Comments from 2009 winners:

“I would really recommend it to other small business owners. It is an excellent opportunity to work with some great managers from different industries and gain new ideas. I feel it has given me greater confidence and hence made me a better manager and made my business stronger.” Darren Williams, William Hill Interiors

“I was a store manager when I applied for the scholarship and although I had spent nearly 20 years in front line retail and developed many people, but I had spent very little time on my own formal development. Since the course I have been promoted to a role where my old skill set is very valid, but also where my new skills around bigger picture and corporate thinking are used daily.” Peter Moore, Debenhams

“The best thing about it was that it gave me a chance to listen to the speakers talking about the big picture of running a business, also learning the same from my colleagues on the course.” Liz Tilley, Cargo Home Shop

Scholarships are available to anyone who has worked in the industry for at least seven years but are particularly relevant for owners, senior / regional managers and store managers. Applications are particularly encouraged from SMEs and independent retail businesses.

OIA Ltd announces new Board

The make up of the newly formed OIA Ltd Board is now fully representative of the outdoor industries in the UK, including leaders from across the outdoor community. The Board brings a wealth of experience and influence to the table and all have committed their valuable time to ensure the OIA succeeds in its goals of not only unifying the industry but giving it a stronger position within the wider UK market and further afield. The new Board comprises transfers from the previous OIA Council and co-opts. In addition, the new Board has appointed Sarah Wilson, Marketing Director of Berghaus, and Ken Reeve, Buying and Merchandising Director of Cotswold Outdoor.

Corry Taylor, Chairman of the OIA Ltd Board, comments:
“The Board brings a wealth of experience and influence to the table and all have committed their valuable time to ensure that the OIA succeeds in its goals of not only unifying the industry, but giving it a stronger position within the wider UK market and further afield.

“I am delighted to have been elected to the role of Chairman and look forward to working with Chief Executive Louise Ramsay and the rest of the Board. We will build on the gathering momentum at the OIA and deliver more and better benefits, more substantial market intelligence and greater political influence for our members and the sector as a whole. Crucially, we will develop initiatives and communications to encourage more people to enjoy healthy, active lifestyles through outdoor activities, with the resulting increase in demand for suitable equipment, clothes, holidays and clubs.

“I would like to pay tribute to my predecessor Frank Bennett, who was Chairman of the OIA Council during some very challenging years. Frank has contributed a huge amount to the association and has successfully overseen its transformation into a more dynamic organisation, fit for purpose in the 21st Century.”

Frank Bennett has stepped down as Chairman, having filled this position over the last few years and done a fanastic job in keeping the OIA moving forwards duing a very difficult and transitional period. Corry Taylor, Managing Director of Bradshaw Taylor, was unanimously voted in as the new Chairman of the Board and Chris Tiso, Chief Executive of Tiso Group Ltd, was elected as Vice-Chairman.

A ‘first’ for the Outdoor Industry

As part of your Association’s drive to promote best practice for training within the sector, we have been working with Skillsmart Retail and member retailers to align the new Retail Skills Level 2 qualification (which replaced the NVQ in Retail from 1st September this year) to typical retail sales roles in OIA member stores. We believe this initiative is a first for a Trade Association and is a key part of the OIA’s drive to help businesses develop and recognise the skills of their staff.

Following the launch of the ‘pilot’ programme in early 2010 the OIA’s Working Group will be continuing to develop, with Skillsmart Retail, new ‘specialist’ Units for the Retail Skills qualification which reflect the specific skills and knowledge required to advise customers buying clothing and equipment for use in the Outdoors.

What are the ‘business benefits’ of Retail Skills qualifications to OIA members?

Benefits for employers
•	Better trained staff with effective service and selling skills = increased productivity and profitability
•	Sets and reinforces standards of performance for the employee, management and the business
•	Improved retention rates and therefore lower recruitment costs
•	Supports and reinforces in-house training and provides objective measurement of skills development
•	Clarifies training and skills gaps and helps identify employees with potential for further career development into supervisory and management roles
•	Enhances your business’ reputation as a great place to work and to develop the skills for a successful career in retail

Benefits for employees
•	Greater job satisfaction and improved confidence in the role
•	Nationally recognised retail qualification
•	Supports and measures skills development
•	Seen as a valued contributor to the business

Benefit to the industry.
•	Better trained staff allows supplier brands to focus on product training.
•	Protects sector reputation for specialist expertise by raising the bar and promoting the specialist outdoor retailers to wider consumer.
•	Professionalises the industry, makes working within retail more aspirational and encourages the development of career pathways in the sector.
•	Promotes standard high quality of training across the sector

A unique opportunity to develop your staff retail skills

What is it?
The new Retail Skills Certificate is a nationally recognised qualification for our industry developed by Skillsmart Retail, the Sector Skills Council for the retail industry. Retail Skills is a competence based qualification which is achieved in the workplace and recognises what people do.

OIA involvement
As the leading body for the outdoor industry, one of the OIA’s key objectives is to promote training and careers, encourage more people to work within the sector and improve skills levels across the board.

To launch the Retail Skills programme, the OIA, with the assistance of a working party of members and Skillsmart Retail, has agreed a set of core units from the Retail Skills Certificate Level 2 in order to pilot the programme. The pilot scheme will not include the OIA specific units which are yet to be written; however they do reflect the core skills for Sales Assistants which are essential to success in retail service and sales.

Who are the qualifications aimed at?
All retail sales personnel working in any size of retailer.

What is involved?

⇨	Skillsmart Retail and the National Skills Academy for Retail’s skills shops will deliver the Retail Skills qualification in your store, on the job.
⇨	The National Skills Academy for Retail’s skills shops will support the delivery of the qualification with government funding
⇨	The pilot will ideally launch in 6-8 OIA member stores with 2-4 employees per store.

When will the pilot start?
Starts mid-February and runs for nine months. Successful employees will graduate with a Retail Skills Level 2 Certificate.

Next steps
To find out more about the pilot scheme and to register your interest and place/s contact Louise Ramsay by the 13th January 2010:
OIA members participate in Collaboration, Social Media and Cloud Computing workshop

On 10 December 2009 a small group of members of theOutdoor Industries Association(sponsors of Innovation for Extremes) participated in the closing workshop of Lancaster University Management School (LUMS) Innovation course on the MSc in E-business and Innovation programme on social media and collaboration. The idea of drawing business and the university together is core to the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development where their research and teaching is inseparable from the work they do with business.

The session was a taster, drawing attention to the importance of collaborative platforms and social media, the speed of change and the implications for business.

Bookings now being taken for Innove-ex 2010

The OIA, headline sponsors, see Innov_ex as being about the future health of the UK outdoor trade, a health that can be achieved by better understanding of the balance between commercial and environmental choices and by the development of the next generation of innovators.

Innov_ex 2009 fulfilled both those aims. The agenda, with its focus on transparency, carbon foot-printing and sustainable business models highlighted the importance of making informed choices across the whole supply chain. The student prize associates the OIA with the development of the next generation of innovators, while an exciting session on rapid manufacturing showed how combinations of technology are reducing the cost and increasing the potential of customisation.

The OIA introduces a manifesto for 2010

The Outdoor Industries Association (OIA) has outlined its plans for 2010, a year that it believes presents both ongoing challenges and significant opportunities to businesses operating in the sector. The OIA finished 2009 with a new chairman and board and by putting the finishing touches to the details of a sustained programme of activity for this year.

OIA chief executive Louise Ramsay explains:
“I think that 2010 will be a very challenging year for business. Although many outdoor retailers and brands enjoyed a busy December and start to the year thanks to the pre-Christmas sales uplift and the prolonged cold snap, the outlook is less clear.

“We are of course in a General Election year and the economy will dominate the political and media agendas. All of the main parties are warning of cutbacks ahead – not only will there be a tough spending round, but tax rises also seem to be inevitable. At the same time, as the country emerges from recession, interest rates may well start to creep up again, and oil prices have already risen significantly during the last few months. All of this is going to have an impact on disposable income and, more than ever, consumers are likely to be seeking great value in any purchases they make.

“2009 was the year of the ‘staycation’ and a camping and caravanning boom, and early signs show that outdoor holiday providers are already building on that success this year. However, the British weather ensured that not everyone enjoyed a warm and dry experience under canvas or portable roof last year, and the recent wintry conditions have got people thinking about getting away to the sun. So, despite the economic context, many people may well make a firm commitment to save up for a main holiday abroad. This means that we’re all going to have to work very hard to earn what spend there is available and keep it in this country.”

“Having said all of that, it is worth bearing in mind that the UK outdoor industries are generally in good shape. Although not completely insulated from it, the sector performed relatively well during the recession, and the general public’s appetite for outdoor adventure continues to grow unabated. OIA members are the real experts in providing products and services for the outdoors. We should never forget that and the association will be pushing that message very hard to a wide audience, clearly pointing consumers towards its members for advice, services and products that will help them make the most of the great outdoors.

“During the second half of 2009, we introduced a range of new benefits and services for existing members and to attract new members. These offer excellent value when assessed alongside the cost of joining and have already helped the OIA to start rebuilding and broadening its membership base. We have succeeded in attracting members from across the sector, with the likes of Glenmore Lodge, Scottish Natural Heritage, Edinburgh International Climbing Arena and The Outward Bound Trust joining our ranks.

“Looking forward into 2010, I will continue to work with the board and dedicated working groups to develop and introduce improved benefits and services for members. There are some specific areas that we are going to put a lot of focus on:

•	providing accurate and useful market intelligence;
•	setting standards for retail training and sales through developing a retail skills qualification;
•	encouraging people to consider careers in the outdoors through outreach programmes;
•	raising our game in lobbying and influencing UK and European government on issues and legislation that impact our sector;
•	collaborating with organisations to establish practical and commercial sustainability best practice models for outdoor businesses.

“Above all, the OIA will continue to support and lead on behalf of the outdoor sector, providing a clear and consistent voice for the industry. Our objective is to help to grow our industry for the benefit of all, and encourage more people to explore the outdoors, responsibly.”

OIA priorities for 2010

Market intelligence

Over the last two years, in Shaping the Future, the OIA has produced two comprehensive and well received industry reports titled ‘Shaping the Future’.. They have provided benchmarks on core consumer attitudes and buying habits. In 2010, the association will build on the success of Shaping the Future and develop even more detailed and insightful market intelligence that clearly defines the UK outdoor sector and the organisations that operate within it. The OIA board recently set up a working group to take responsibility for this area of work, which aims to deliver results in the summer. In addition, the association will be undertaking more regular consumer surveys to better inform and influence the consumer media.

Careers and skills

The first initiave of the year is the OIA Retail skills qualification. Working with Skillsmart Retail, the sector skills council for the retail industry, the OIA is developing a competence based qualification for outdoor retail staff that will recognise the work that they do and provide a benchmark standard for the whole sector. The pilot project will start in mid February with a select number of OIA member stores, with a full Retail Skills Certificate scheme due to launch later in the year.

The units of competence within the new qualification reflect actual working practices and will reinforce skills which retailers need to develop in their staff in order to trade successfully. The OIA is keen to enable all retail members to access the qualification from summer 2010 and include it as part of their strategy for staff development. The aim is to promote best practice for training within the sector and help businesses develop and recognise the skills of their staff. The Retail Skills Certificate will help to establish a clear, consistent standard for the outdoor sector that can be communicated to both the trade and consumers, for the benefit of all.

In addition, the OIA will be encouraging careers in the outdoors through outreach initiatives. These will include supporting the Career Zone at the NEC Outdoors Show and providing speakers from across the industry sectors to promote the outdoors in all its guises, as an aspirational and rewarding career choice. The association will also be presenting at the new Outdoor Pursuits show in Scotland to do the same.

Lobbying, legislation and influencing UK and Europe governments

This is a priority area for the OIA and another for which a working group has been created. Simply keeping a track of legislation, and potential legislation, that could have an impact on the outdoor sector is a difficult task. So, exerting any influence on politicians or legislative bodies is even more challenging. The OIA will establish a clear position on issues, identify a route in to key policy makers and then lobby using clear reasoning, backed up by relevant evidence. This won’t be achieved in isolation by the association and the working group is drawing up a plan to co-ordinate with organisations such as the European Outdoor Group and the English Outdoor Council, along with other trade and consumer groups that operate in the outdoors.

Practical and commercial sustainability best practice

The OIA is entering its third year of working with the team behind the annual Innovation for Extremes conference. Based at Lancaster University Management School, Innov_ex 10 will be held on Wednesday 28th April and as ever is being organised by Mary Rose and Mike Parsons. The OIA is presenting sponsor of the event and is working with Mary and Mike to develop a full and stimulating programme that follows the theme: “Sustainability: Products, Processes and Activities”.

The 2008 and 2009 conferences positioned Innov_ex at the forefront of discussion around responses to climate change in the outdoor industries. This year’s event will focus on the practical and commercial challenges (and opportunities) businesses face in achieving sustainability and, in particular, will address the difficulties that smaller companies have to overcome. Innov_ex will highlight the importance of developing holistic approaches to supply chain management to inform choices that impact on both the environment and on businesses. The conference aims to provide those who attend with an array of impactful and commercially sensible options for introducing improved sustainability into their business plans.

During the event, the annual Innovation Design Prize will also be awarded. Now in its fourth year, the prize has developed a reputation as a springboard to commercial opportunity for new designers and represents a vital investment in the future of sustainable innovation in the outdoor industries. In the lead up to Innov_ex, the OIA will be profiling past winners on its website and through PR.

Internationally, the OIA is also collaborating with the European Outdoor Group (EOG) on initiatives relating to sustainability and is playing an active role in the EOG’s Sustainability Working Group.

Industry Promotion

During 2009, the OIA continued to enhance its communications tools and networking opportunities – to members, the wider industry and the public at large. Key to this was the development of a new website – www.outdoorindustriesassociation.co.uk – which hosts a wide range of resources for OIA members as well as information and links for consumers.

A dedicated members’ area now includes news, a range of online business support services, research data and much more. A careers section also allows anyone interested in working in the outdoor sector to search for job opportunities – all OIA members can list vacancies there free of charge.

The website will continue to be the hub of OIA communications in 2010 and additional content, functions and services will be introduced to the site throughout the year, designed to help direct more consumers into the outdoors, well equipped and with a responsible attitude. OIA news, media coverage and content, along with external events, will be integral to delivering on key objectives for the benefit of members and the industry as a whole.

Louise Ramsay concludes:
“Despite the challenging times that we all continue to face, I am optimistic about 2010. I believe that there are going to be some great opportunities for organisations operating in the outdoor sector and the work that the OIA undertakes will respond to those and help members to make the most of them. We have a diverse and increasingly engaged membership that will be fully involved in all OIA activities, along with a strong and committed board that will ensure that the association does not falter. Our robust and comprehensive manifesto for 2010 offers dynamism, authority and leadership to the industry.”

Innovation Design Prize prepares to inspire the next generation of outdoor visionaries

The search has started for the most exciting new innovation for the outdoor industries. Together, the Outdoor Industries Association (OIA) and the team behind the eighth Innovation for Extremes conference (Innov_ex 10) have launched this year’s Innov_ex Innovation Design Prize. Judged annually by a panel of industry experts, the prize will be awarded during Innov_ex 10, which will be held on 28th April at Lancaster University Management School and will explore the theme, “Innovation and the outdoors: sustainable products, processes and activities”.

Sustainable innovation in the outdoors sits at the heart of Innov_ex and has also been identified as a key focus for the OIA. One aspect of that sustainability involves encouraging the next generation of innovators to develop their ideas and products for the outdoor sector. The Innovation Design Prize helps to do that, offering a cash prize, along with bespoke business mentoring and, essentially, profile and exposure to many of the movers and shakers in the outdoor sector. Previous winners of the prize have gone on to see their innovation develop into commercially viable products or services.

In 2009, the winner of the Innovation Design prize was Pete Dollman, with his invention Figfour, a pioneering training aid that emulates the action and technique of climbing with ice axes. Essentially, Figfour is a product that combines wooden sticks with durable hoops and allows people to develop the strengths required for climbing with axes (also known as dry-tooling), but on a standard indoor climbing wall.

Pete, 26, first came up with the concept while studying Innovative Product Design at the University of Dundee. A keen dry-tooler himself, Pete investigated the habits and use of equipment by other climbers. Discovering that very limited training facilities existed for climbers during winter, particularly for dry-tooling, Pete knew that there was a gap in the market.

The ‘eureka’ moment came when Pete was preparing for a dry-tooling competition by pulling himself up by loops of rope hung over the jugs on a fingerboard. Pete believed the transition could be made from a fingerboard to a bouldering wall – and he was right.

Pete explains: “I never thought Figfour would change the world, but I felt that it was a strong idea which could help change how people approached winter climbing.”

In 2009, he was encouraged to enter the Innov_ex Innovation Design Prize after showcasing his work at the New Designers show in London. By engaging with Innov_ex, Pete hoped to gain nothing more than quality feedback from outdoor professionals. Instead, he was presented with the prize at Innov_ex 09 for what the judges concluded was a genuinely creative and innovative invention.

Pete adds: “I was given some great development ideas and feedback on the day which certainly helped me in the process of taking Figfour to market. I was lucky enough to have already been working with Alpkit who were really into the idea, but the prize definitely gave me a bit more faith in the concept and a renewed momentum to push on with the project and make it happen.”

Since winning the Innovation Design Prize, Pete Dollman has continued to develop and refine Figfour for market, working with outdoor specialist Alpkit. Winning the Innovation Design Prize put Pete and his product in the spotlight, giving him invaluable publicity and building his reputation with key opinion formers in the outdoor industries.

Pete has a deep understanding of the importance to the outdoor sector of initiatives like the Innovation Design Prize: “I don’t think the importance of supporting future innovators and encouraging them into the outdoor industry can be over-estimated. The prize offers a chance for new designers to get their concepts and ideas out there and I’d hope that the new and inventive products showcased by the prize will inspire those of us already working within the industry to really think about what is possible.”www.innovation-for-extremes.org/prize.html

As sponsor of Innov_ex, the Outdoor Industries Association is playing a role in encouraging young design talent into the sector for the benefit of the long term health of the UK’s outdoor industries. Innov_ex is one of a range of initiatives that the OIA is pursuing to encourage people to consider a career in the outdoors, and to help them find pathways to specialist brands, retailers, service providers and other organisations that operate in the sector.

Louise Ramsay, chief executive of the Outdoor Industries Association, explains: “As the outdoors continues to grow in popularity, competition in the sector is getting fiercer, both among established businesses, but also with new entrants and other activities that offer an appeal to the public during their leisure time. Collectively, we need to continue to innovate in products and services, and that will only be achieved if we can attract the brightest young minds to our industry.

“Innov_ex’s Innovation Design Prize is really important – it showcases some of the best talent around, encourages invention and supports young designers as they start their careers in the outdoor sector. I encourage anyone who thinks that they have a great idea that is applicable to the outdoors to find out more about the prize and consider entering. However, this is just one piece of a much bigger jigsaw. The OIA is working with partners on extensive outreach programmes designed to not only bring more people into the outdoors for recreation, but also inspire the next generation of industry leaders and innovators.”

Martin Binnendijk joins the Board of the Outdoor Industries Association

Martin Binnendijk, chief executive officer of Hi-Tec, has been co-opted onto the Board of the Outdoor Industries Association. During the same meeting at which Martin was co-opted, Mark Held stepped down from his role as a director of the OIA Board to concentrate on developing the European Outdoor Group. Mark will continue to be actively involved in the OIA’s lobbying working group.

Martin Binnendijk has almost 30 years experience in business. He started his career in his family’s business in the wholesale supplies of leather goods, which included a small retail shop. After studying marketing in The Hague, Martin joined Avery Dennison in Holland in 1985 as product manager. He moved to UK in 1994 to run a production unit supplying automotive parts (for the likes of Rover, Ford, Mini and others) and was made general manager in 1995. In 1997, he took up a role heading up three businesses for Avery Dennison in Boston, USA, before moving to Los Angeles in 2000 to run a large office products division for the same company. Then, in 2002, Martin was persuaded by Frank van Wezel to return to the UK to run Hi-Tec.

Martin Binnendijk comments:
“I am absolutely delighted to be co-opted to the OIA Board. The many recent changes and new initiatives that the OIA has embraced have already made it a more relevant and effective body for our industry. I can’t wait to become more actively involved and do my bit to continue to drive the outdoor industry forward.”

Louise Ramsay, chief executive of the OIA, adds:
“Mark Held has been instrumental in the recent regeneration of the Outdoor Industries Association. Everyone on the Board thanks Mark for his invaluable contribution, which certainly doesn’t come to an end now that he has stepped down. I am particularly grateful for all his input and guidance since I joined the organisation.

“I am delighted that Martin Binnendijk has agreed to join the Board. He brings a wealth of experience to the OIA and has clearly expressed his desire to contribute to the association’s key aims and objectives. I look forward to working with him on a range of important projects for the benefit of the UK’s outdoor sector.”

The OIA publishes Minimal Impact guidelines and tips

The OIA has published a guide on how to ensure you leave minimal impact on the environment when you are out and about, with a handy one page summary.

Aimed at consumers, it is also a valuable tool for OIA members to include in their marketing material and help get the message accross to members of the public.

Chris Townsend, President of Mountaineering Council of Scotland said of the guide: "The hills and wild places where our adventures take place and that inspire us and refresh our spirits are shrinking and deteriorating due to human activities. We need to cherish and protect what we have left, which means being careful to minimise our impact, so that these precious places are there for future generations to enjoy and for the animals and plants for whom they are home. Each one of us can do this by thinking about our impact and following the advice laid out here."

VIEW MINIMAL IMPACT GUIDE IN OUR PUBLIC ZONE SECTION

'Minimal impact' was written for the OIA by John Traynor. John writes regularly for outdoor magazines and has been backpacking and camping for most of his life.

Outdoor Industries Association launches online ‘Find your local’ facility

The Outdoor Industries Association (OIA) has taken some big steps in the development of its website by launching a new ‘Find your local’ facility designed to enhance membership benefits and to help visitors to the site find services across the UK relevant to the outdoor industries.

Sponsored by HF Holidays, the UK’s leading walking and leisure activity company, the new area of the site is designed to help consumers browse and search for outdoor related organisations geographically and by industry sector, using it as a one-stop-shop reference source whether they are heading off on holiday and looking for new services locally. It will also be a top level reference source for both media and government.

It will also provide substantial benefits to OIA members, who will have full listings on the map including a description of their business, logo, web link and contact details. Any business which has more than one outlet such as retailers or outdoor centre’s will be able to show all locations.

In addition, as the site develops there will be the facility to promote members whom are part of recognized schemes or training programmes for example.

Martin Binnendijk, chief executive officer, HI-TEC Sports Europe, said: “I am extremely excited about OIA's latest initiative that provides a service both to the trade and the consumer. The new online mapping tool brings the two parties together in an easy and convenient way and shows how the association is looking at new and innovative ways to service the outdoor industry and the outdoor
consumer”.

Louise Ramsay, chief executive of the Outdoor Industries Association, adds: “The OIA website is an essential portal to communicate vital information for our members and end users. One of our key objectives is to facilitate the growth of our industry, and to a great extent this will be achieved by getting more members of the public to experience and explore the outdoors, responsibly. In doing so we need to ensure they are directed to our members, who are the real experts.

“Included in the next phase of the our development is to actively target consumers and drive them to the website via our new Public Zone which will have more visible links to kit lists, safety advice and other relevant information as well as an enhanced careers section. This is also where the online member mapping fits in.”

New Outdoor Industries Association report provides insight into outdoor consumer retail behaviour

The Outdoor Industries Association (OIA) has just published the third volume of Shaping the Future, as part of our ongoing and comprehensive research programme. This year’s report includes an in depth review of the retail ‘journey’ of outdoor consumers, exploring what influences them, when, why and how they shop, and what they buy. Shaping the Future III also explores the role of outdoor centres and activity holiday providers, highlighting the significant challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for companies and destinations operating in that part of the outdoor sector.

The OIA has also produced a companion supplement for the series of Shaping the Future reports. Tracking the Customer Journey is designed to help association members interpret Shaping the Future research data and use it more effectively to make well informed business decisions within an increasingly competitive market. All Shaping the Future reports and supplements are available free of charge to OIA members (and to non-members for £399+VAT per report).

The theme of Shaping the Future III is 'knowledge, information and preference'. During June, over 3,000 outdoor consumers completed a detailed online survey, offering an insight into their depth of knowledge of outdoor products with a view to making purchases. The resulting data provides a detailed overview of what drives key purchase decisions, and outlines the factors that influence consumer purchases, both before they visit an outdoor retailer and while they are in store.

While the internet has become the pre-eminent focus of pre-purchase research for consumers, in store information and outdoor magazine reviews remain important touchpoints. In contrast, brand or retailer catalogues and word of mouth recommendations from family and friends are becoming much less influential.

Once in store, it appears that many consumers have already decided what products they will purchase. The survey reveals that their experiences in the retail environment rarely have an impact on their purchase decisions, suggesting both that the role of shop assistant is changing, and that there is an opportunity to do more at this stage of the retail journey.

However, Shaping the Future III does highlight some clear differences between age groups in the levels to which consumers can be influenced in their purchase decisions. It is insights such as this that the OIA believes will help its members as they make business development plans.

This year’s OIA research included sections that questioned consumers’ perceptions of and attitudes to outdoor centres and activity holidays. Most people who were surveyed expressed an indifference towards outdoor centres and opinions about them that are out of line with the reality of what a contemporary centre offers. Similar views were expressed about activity holidays and for organisations operating in both sectors, Shaping the Future III offers some clear pointers about how they can better connect with target consumers.

Louise Ramsay, chief executive of the Outdoor Industries Association, comments:
“Over the last three years, Shaping the Future has built up into a very significant body of work. By speaking to thousands of core outdoor consumers, the OIA has been able to develop clear and detailed insights into attitudes, habits and behaviour. We have focused on key issues that are important to companies operating in our industry and have delivered reports that reflect both the state of the market now, and map out the direction in which it is travelling.

“There is such a wealth of information contained in the three Shaping the Future reports that we felt it was important to help OIA members understand the significance of the material, and identify ways in which they could use the reports to benefit their businesses or organisations. Tracking the Customer Journey is a companion supplement, that we have produced to sit alongside the three main reports. It helps businesses interpret some of the key data that has informed Shaping the Future and provides practical suggestions on using it to develop business plans.

“This research programme is one of the key projects that the OIA delivers on behalf of its members and all of the reports, and the supplement, are available free to association members now.”

This latest phase of the OIA’s ongoing research programme was managed by Profile Outdoors Ltd, with the help of Berghaus, The Camping and Caravanning Club, Hi-Tec, TGO and Trail Magazine. Shaping the Future III is being distributed free of charge to all OIA members and will be available to download from the members area of www.oia.co.uk, along with the detailed research data and the Tracking the Customer Journey supplement. The report can also be purchased from the OIA by non members.

Successful pilot scheme helps OIA develop blueprint for retail training strategy

A retail training pilot scheme run by the Outdoor Industries Association (OIA) has concluded, providing a clear direction for a future strategy to build staff skills in the sector. The pilot programme ran from March until September and was managed by Skillsmart Retail, the sector skills council for the retail industry, working closely with OIA chief executive Louise Ramsay and the OIA retail skills working group.

The OIA recruited six member companies to participate in the pilot scheme, representing a comprehensive spread of outdoor retailers. They included Ellis Brigham, The Epicentre, George Fisher, Itchy Feet, Oswald Bailey and Tiso. Staff from the participating stores completed a series of modules, designed to create and promote best practice for training and skills development in the outdoor retail sector. The programme also focused on helping businesses to develop and recognise the skills of their staff and fully appreciate the value of investment in this area.

The OIA and Skillsmart Retail set out clear deliverables for all participants, based around retention, achievement, productivity, shop manager advocacy, training and staff progression. Over the course of the project, shop staff and their managers were given an insight into a variety of training initiatives and levels, providing useful feedback that can help the OIA develop a long term retail training strategy for its members and the wider industry. Successful graduates from the pilot scheme will be awarded their Level 2 Retail Skills certificate, along with a goodie bag donated by Anatom.

Using information and insight gained from the programme, the OIA is now finalising its longer term retail training plans. The intention is to find a third party expert training provider to develop a comprehensive strategy and programme of activity, rolling out after a launch at the OIA AGM on 3 March 2011.

Louise Ramsay, OIA chief executive, comments: “In the field of training, outdoor retailers face a multitude of challenges, not least that of finding the time and other resource to support staff skills development. At the moment, there is no umbrella programme, bespoke to the outdoor industry, that offers a widely recognised and respected qualification. The consistent feedback we have received for some time is that this is a crucial area that needs addressing.

“The pilot scheme has been extremely useful. It has identified the key areas that need addressing and packaging into an assessable qualification, such as a standard for customer service and a sound technical knowledge of outdoor product. We are now in a position to seek a suitable third party training provider who can deliver a comprehensive scheme for the OIA. Once up and running, I believe that this will be of huge benefit to our members and their staff. The association will also be able to use it as a quality mark that we can promote to the general public, driving custom to retailers that we can highlight as demonstrable outdoor experts.”

OIA promotes internship scheme to the outdoor industry

The OIA is partnering up with Lancaster University Management School to promote their internship scheme to the outdoor industry.

As part of LUMS’s management courses, students have the option to take a year out in industry where they have both the chance to learn and experience real industry skills as well as bring some of their own knowledge and expertise to their host employer.

This is an ideal opportunity to attract new talent to the outdoor industry, especially during these lean times, and it provides a great value for money solution for businesses. A recent survey report by the Charted Institute of Personal Development (CIPD) showed that 69% of employers see internships as a good way to develop new talent in an industry sector, and 76% think they can be used as a way to test potential new staff. Internships can be especially beneficial for SMEs looking to either attract new business talent or take on new staff on a project basis without the long term commitment and cost.

Internships bring many benefits to companies and are frequently put to work investigating issues, opportunities or problem areas. It doesn’t have to be project based and students can be employed in a post, although there are many areas theses students specialise in such as:

•	Marketing and branding,
•	HR management,
•	Workflow problems and
•	Organisational change.

The employer also has the additional benefit of accessing the knowledge held at the University via the project supervisor.

Applications are taken all year but in general matches to companies are made throughout January and February. An average salary paid, depending on location, is between £13-19k. So if you would like to find out more get in touch today with Jo Valentine at Lancaster University Management School (01524 510718).

The latest initiative by the Outdoor Industries Association (OIA) has enjoyed a successful launch. Held in Manchester on 3 November, the first OIA CEO and Director Forum attracted senior figures from across the outdoor sector, for presentations and debate on key issues affecting the industry. The evening also saw over £700 raised for an outdoors charity.

The OIA CEO and Director Forum was chaired by Brian Smith, an OIA board member and chief executive of HF Holidays, who opened the event by highlighting some of the issues that now face the outdoor industries in the UK. He introduced the main theme for the evening: ‘Government cuts - is it all doom and gloom? Identifying the opportunities and threats to the industry collectively’.

Louise Ramsay, chief executive of the OIA, then outlined some of the association’s plans for the future, including a major consumer facing project that will be launched early in 2011. Andy Gibb of Ocean Media presented plans for the OIA supported Outdoor Leisure Show, which will take place from 25-27 February 2011 at the NEC. The key note presentation was made by Tom Franklin, chief executive of The Ramblers. Tom articulated some of the challenges that the walking community is facing, in the context of local authority cuts that are likely to have an impact on access to, and the upkeep of, rights of way. He also highlighted the fact that reduced public funding is putting at risk a range of initiatives that exist to encourage people to experience the outdoors.

Following the presentations, there was an open and positive debate about many of the topics that had been covered. The forum attracted chief executives and directors from across the outdoor industries, representing brands, retailers, distributors, activity holiday providers, event organisers, special interest groups and consumer organisations. There was a consensus that despite the current challenging circumstances for the business community, there remain many opportunities for organisations operating in the sector. There was strong support for the lead role that the OIA is taking to unite and effectively represent the outdoor industries, joining up agendas with other organisations and promoting the outdoors to a wider audience.

During the event, those who attended voted for a charity to support on the night. They chose Equal Adventure, which provides a wide range of support that helps people with disabilities to pursue outdoor adventures and lead active lifestyles. A raffle, with a prize donated by HF Holidays - of a two night break for two people at one of HF Holidays’ Country House Hotels - raised £720 for the charity, which will contribute towards the foundation of the Equal Adventure Bursary, to be launched at the Royal Geographical Society in London on 27 January 2011. The bursary will provide support for a young disabled adventurer to make their first extended journey, fieldwork contribution or environmental contribution, in the outdoors.

Louise Ramsay, chief executive of the OIA, comments:
“I was delighted by the turnout for the first OIA CEO and Director Forum. We attracted influential people from across the outdoor sector and the quality of both the presentations and the round table discussion was very high. The group focused on some fundamentally important issues, but crucially, there was a collective commitment to collaborate in areas that affect the whole sector. That willingness to put aside commercial rivalries to work on projects that sustain and grow the outdoor industries in challenging times, is very encouraging.

“The OIA has plans that relate directly to many of the themes that were covered during the evening. We were very grateful for Tom Franklin’s time and contribution and I hope that we can develop an ongoing and effective working relationship with The Ramblers for the benefit of the whole outdoor community. I am already looking forward to the next OIA CEO and Director Forum.”

Brian Smith, chief executive of HF Holidays, adds:
“It was a very stimulating evening, with great contributions from around the table, and as such, it was an absolute pleasure to chair. HF Holidays was very happy to support the event by donating the raffle prize and I hope that the money raised on the night makes a real difference for those who benefit from the great work of Equal Adventure.”

The organisations represented at the OIA CEO and Director Forum were: HF Holidays, Berghaus, Hi-Tec, Columbia, Camping & Caravanning Club, Bradshaw Taylor, Haglofs, The Ramblers, Cotswold

Outdoor, Oswald Bailey, Institute for Outdoor Learning, Ocean Media and Press Ahead PR. The next forum will take place on 12 April 2011, the evening of the first day of the OIA sponsored two day Innov_ex conference, at Lancaster University Management School. The OIA has also confirmed the date for its next annual general meeting, which will be held on 3 March 2011 in Birmingham, at a venue to be confirmed.

Public urged to prepare a proper winter wardrobe

Businesses that supply outdoor clothing and accessories have reported a sudden surge in business following the arrival of early winter weather in the UK. The Outdoor Industries Association (OIA) has been receiving news of very brisk trading from its members, as the public rush to buy warm kit to combat the low temperatures. The big freeze has benefited large and small retailers alike and the OIA is urging people to ensure that they are properly equipped for what could be a long and cold winter.

Sales of insulated items such as down jackets, fleeces and hats and gloves have been particularly high, but the OIA has warned the public to be careful when shopping for outdoor kit. Products that look warm and technical on the shelf don’t always deliver that promise outside, which could be dangerous in very cold conditions. Consumers are being strongly advised to seek professional advice from specialist outdoor stores.

Louise Ramsay, chief executive of the Outdoor Industries Association, has this advice:
“When temperatures plummet, it is really important that members of the public who choose to or have to go outdoors are properly prepared. If you get caught outside – or in your car – in the worst conditions, you could seriously regret not investing in garments that use proven cold weather performance materials and construction techniques. There are over 1,000 specialist outdoor stores around the UK, who can offer great guidance and the good news is that getting properly kitted out doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Making that investment now might just save you from a very unpleasant experience, or even worse.”

OIA will bring the outdoors to the public with The Active Guide

The Outdoor Industries Association (OIA) are delighted to reveal the first details of its major initiative for 2011. Going live in March, The Active Guide (TAG) will be a new comprehensive and interactive online guide to the best outdoor locations and activities around the UK. Through a special trade microsite (http://getinvolved.theactiveguide.com/index.htm), the we are offering all outdoor businesses in the country an opportunity to feature on TAG free of charge and reach many thousands of outdoor consumers during what will be a sustained communications campaign by the association.

TAG will be a complete guide for members of the general public who want to participate in outdoor activities such as walking, cycling, climbing, camping, caravanning and a variety of water sports. Using the site's innovative map based interface, visitors will be able to quickly access a database of service providers, activity centres, clubs, retail outlets and much more. The site will also direct them to a wealth of user generated content including people's favourite locations, routes, videos, photos, and other useful information.

The TAG website has been developed during the last six months and is almost ready to go live. The OIA has developed content of its own, but is now asking organisations that operate in the outdoor sector to contribute the relevant information that will fully populate TAG. All outdoor businesses that submit material will be credited, with links to their own websites. However, OIA members will benefit from enhanced listings that will also stand out more prominently. In addition, the association is offering a wide range of advertising opportunities on TAG, with prices starting from as low as £80.

TAG will prominently feature user generated content and the OIA is encouraging keen writers to draft and submit articles for inclusion on the site, on a variety of outdoor topics. All published authors will be fully credited, and TAG will include links to their own sites or blogs, if they have them. We will publish articles on the site that offer both information and advice, all intended to encourage more people to explore the outdoors, armed with the appropriate knowledge and products for their chosen activities.

Louise Ramsay, OIA chief executive, comments:
“The Active Guide is the OIA’s linchpin project for 2011. We have been preparing the site for many months now, developing a website that will be specifically targeted at the general public and is a resource for the UK industry as a whole. Its aim is to encourage greater participation in the outdoors while promoting UK outdoor businesses. It will not only offer great content to established outdoor enthusiasts, but it will also reach out to a wider audience, bringing new consumers closer to our industry and, in particular to OIA members and others who contribute to the site. Throughout the year, we will be running a proactive communications campaign to promote TAG, using it to generate interest from the mainstream media and exposing outdoor companies to a wide audience.

“However, first we need to fully populate TAG and for that, all outdoor businesses have an opportunity to be represented on the site. The enhanced OIA member listing is also available to companies that decide to join the association for the first time, and there are some very good value advertising deals available for businesses that want to boost their presence on TAG even more. The site is looking great, it’s very easy to use and I am confident that when it launches it has the potential to become the definitive online source of information for people who are looking for outdoor inspiration in the UK.”

GET INVOLVED HERE

First Outdoor Industries Association conference makes the right connections

The first Outdoor Industries Association (OIA) conference has been hailed as a success by the delegates who attended. Around 60 representatives from all parts of the outdoor sector gathered for the event in Solihull last week, which was sponsored by the Camping and Caravanning Club. They participated in a full day of presentations and interactive workshops, and were addressed by the local MP, who offered a political perspective on the importance of the work that the OIA does.

The conference was opened by OIA chair Corry Taylor, who issued a rallying cry to outdoor organisations to work closely with the association to build the industry’s size and influence and to collaborate on projects designed to encourage more people to experience the outdoors.

Chief executive Louise Ramsay made reference to ongoing research into the size of the UK industry, which is set to reveal its true economic contribution to the UK. She pointed out that the final figures will show that the sector has been ‘underselling’ itself for too long and the OIA will use the data to lead a sustained campaign to improve the outdoor industry’s profile and influence at a national level. Louise then outlined the OIA’s main plans for 2011 and introduced two of the year’s key initiatives. The first of these is the launch of an industry wide retail training skills programme and the second is The Active Guide (TAG), which was described in more detail by its developer, Nick Salloway of Different Digital. This was followed by a lively discussion about TAG, with contributions from the floor that will help shape the final product before its launch in April.

The morning session concluded with a speech by Lorely Burt, MP for Solihull, and a Liberal Democrat business spokesperson and co-chair of the Liberal Democrat parliamentary committee for business, innovation and skills. Mrs Burt provided an insight into the Government’s approach to dealing with the country’s economic challenges and assured the conference that there is room for optimism, particularly for the outdoor industry. She cited improving public health and wellbeing as areas that the Government is pursuing with vigour and pointed out that the outdoor sector can make a big contribution to these agendas. Mrs Burt concluded by urging the OIA to open up a long term dialogue with Government and offered to assist in facilitating that.

After a networking lunch, the conference delegates attended a series of interactive workshops covering a range of topics: ‘Green labels – what do they mean for brands, retailers and the consumer’, led by Charles Ross of Bushbaby; ‘how important is customer service to the bottom line’, led by Don Gladstone of Peoplework; ‘applying social media in business’, led by Nick Salloway of Different Digital and Chris Lines of Press Ahead; and ‘will the consumer finally have to start paying the true cost of their apparel, footwear and accessories’, led by Mark Held of the European Outdoor Group. The workshops were both well attended and well received.

The conference concluded with two presentations from very different sources. First, Andy Robinson, CEO of the Institute for Outdoor Learning, and Adnam Zamam, and outdoor instructor and youth mentor, explored the topic of promoting greater accessibility to the outdoors to the UK’s ethnic minorities. Adnam related his own story and his journey from being a computer games obsessed Asian teenager who saw no relevance in the outdoors to someone who earns a living instructing and inspiring others to get outside. He was able to give an invaluable insight into the cultural challenges that the industry faces in reaching different communities.

Mark Held of the European Outdoor Group completed the programme with a presentation about sustainability and the outdoor industry. Mark outlined the fundamental ways in which companies will have to change the way they do business in order to find a genuinely sustainable model. He also revealed some of the support and tools available to help firms achieve that and demonstrated how the outdoor industry is in some ways leading the way for other sectors.

Corry Taylor closed the conference by repeating his call for all outdoor organisations in the UK to work closely with the OIA so that the industry can collectively reach more of the general population and in the process drive business growth for the benefit of all.

Louise Ramsay, chief executive of the OIA, comments:
“I believe that the first OIA conference has proved to be a significant success. We had a full and varied agenda, a great turnout of members and some non members (though I hope to convert the latter very soon), and I felt that each session offered something of real value to delegates. I am grateful to everyone who contributed to a stimulating day.

“So far, the feedback I have received has been very positive, but this is just a platform. If the OIA is going to be a genuinely successful and influential trade body, we need to bring in more members, drive interest and revenue through The Active Guide, and generally start to be more outward looking. The rollout of our retail skills training programme is also going to play a very important role in driving the sector forward, setting a benchmark in customer service standards that will mark out the industry as progressive and consumer friendly.

“Lorely Burt’s contribution was very welcome and we will now seek to open a constructive national dialogue with the Government. This conference was a very good milestone and gives me even more confidence that we will achieve our strategic objectives.”

Lorely Burt MP comments:
“The outdoor industry is one that ticks many of the Government’s boxes, not least because it is a sector that is growing in difficult economic times. The businesses that the Outdoor Industries Association represents not only support tens of thousands of jobs, they also contribute to the health and wellbeing of this country in a green and sustainable way. I was glad to be able to speak at this inaugural conference and meet some of the people who are working hard to build the outdoor industry for the benefit of all.”

Richard Cotter, Berghaus brand president, adds:
“The conference was well organised and there was a good balance of content. I think that the OIA put together a programme that was both stimulating and practically useful. For an inaugural event, I was impressed by the turnout from across the outdoor industry and I certainly hope that the association uses this as a platform for even bigger events of the type in the future.”

It’s a great opportunity to engage with existing customers and reach out to new ones.

So continue to contribute, promote and get involved! The OIA will having a working group, chaired by Michelle Dickinson, OIA Board members and Head of Marketing at Burton McCall, which will look to constantly evolve and develop the site over the coming months and years, so any feedback please send to the OIA.

Get started with the 'Sustainability is a journey' initiative

Sponsored by the OIA, the Innovation for Extremes Conference at the Lancaster University Management School is ‘the annual conference for innovation in all mountain and adventure sports and extreme environments.'

Sustainability is a key theme for Innov_ex and, of course, for all of us and was summed up last year by Ben Kellard from Forum for the Future as “a dynamic process which enables all people to realise their potential and improve their quality of life in ways which simultaneously protect and enhance the Earth’s life support systems.” Who would argue with that? The theme for the 2011 conference was 'Sustainability is a journey' so the OIA is encouraging outdoor businesses to start or develop their own journeys.

A straightforward guide to getting started in practical terms!

The progress made by owner Steve Taylor and the staff team at the Castle Climbing Centre formed the basis of an inspirational presentation at this year's conference and we are grateful for their willingness to share their experiences with the outdoor industries to help other businesses start their journey too with some simple steps.

The team identified several key areas which they tackled, with ambitious achievement targets, and embraced the involvement of the whole Castle community – staff, customers, suppliers and neighbours.

These included:

Being carbon neutral

Being water neutral

Sending zero waste to landfill

Raising awareness - fair trade, ethical banking, consumption, waste, biodiversity

Maintaining a safe, customer-focused and profitable business

Information was shared and involvement encouraged through:

Staff meetings

Customer information and posters

A dynamic environmental blog

An eco garden party

PR – newspapers, magazines & radio

Eco awards and staff eco grants

Workdays and workshops

Steve’s tip for getting started: "I think the most important thing is to involve your staff. Tell them what you see as the problem and ask them how they think the company can respond. That way they have ownership of your sustainability initiatives and they’re more likely to make sure they happen. Involving your staff does more than just make your life easier, it empowers them and helps them to realise that they’re not powerless. We can all make a difference! The positive effect goes far beyond your organisation.

The other thing that’s important is to start NOW!

Don’t put it off because you feel you need policies and procedures in place first. That can come later. The important thing is to get everyone on board and get the ball rolling."

Whilst progress has been variable across the goals, the learning curve has been steep and rewarding. Steve believes that owner-managed businesses (which represent 50% of UK GDP) can act effectively, if the will is there, by empowering individuals, setting examples of good practice and ddemonstrating where government needs to apply influence and support.

Check out Castle Climbing Centre’s environmental blog at http://sustainablecastle.blogspot.com/ for some inspiration.

Calling independent outdoor retailers – get your first year OIA membership for free thanks to Columbia

One of the challenges that was put to members at the OIA conference just gone was to help the association reach out to the smaller independent retailers. The OIA already has 47 retailers as members, but there are a plethora out there who are either unaware of the OIA at all, or still judge it by the association of old, and others who perhaps simply cannot see the value in their membership subscription. A fair enough observation if they haven’t seen any of the latest communications.

So Columbia are offering a helping hand with this great offer: product at wholesale to the value of their membership fee for the first year.

The independent retail sector represents a hugely important part of our industry. And whilst the industry dynamics are changing in terms of supplier/ retailer distribution to the consumer, which for the most part can be directly attributed to the proliferation of the Internet, independent retail will always have an essential role to play in the make up of the outdoor industry. But change and evolution is also needed, necessary even, to ensure long term survival. This is where being part of an overarching industry body can help.

The OIA conference demonstrated that the smaller, independent retailer would directly benefit from significant savings through their membership, more than offsetting their subscription. But just as importantly, and ignoring the direct cost savings, free business support services and access to vital data and research, the benefits of membership are also derived from direct promotion of their business to the consumer via the new consumer portal The Active Guide, and reduced rates for the soon to launch industry retail training programme, helping to increase business’s productivity and raise standards across the board. And in times of crisis being part of an industry voice is invaluable.

Newly appointed OIA Board member Anthony Greasby from Countryside Ski & Climb, comments “I think it’s time for independent retailers to sit up and take notice. This is the only trade organisation that’s specifically going to make a difference in our own industry, and I really can’t find any reasons why you wouldn’t want to be part of that.”

Columbia’s UK Country Manager, Dan Trapp, also advocates this notion that we need to work together across the whole sector for the benefit of the industry, and that means joining and supporting the OIA. So much so that he is putting his money where his mouth is and is offering all independent retailers product at wholesale to the value of their membership fee for the first year, even if they are not current Columbia accounts. There’s your value for money straight away.

All in all it is a pretty compelling proposition. But it’s your opinion that counts so here’s our call to non OIA member retailers: get in touch with us to find out what your industry body can do for you, and is already doing for the wider outdoor industry at large.

And with Columbia’s very generous offer, you literally have nothing to lose!

Outdoor Industries Association restructures its executive

The Outdoor Industries Association (OIA) has announced plans to change its executive structure to reflect the organisation’s evolving role and expanding scope. From September, the association will be run by a team made up of a part-time chief executive and a part-time communications director, who will continue to be supported by the current membership and administration manager.

Current chief executive Louise Ramsay identified the need to restructure the OIA’s executive to reflect the broadening remit of the association and proposed the new roles. Louise has decided to step down from the position of chief executive and the OIA board has asked her to fulfil the new communications role. She will also oversee the transition to the new structure and be part of the team that recruits a new chief executive for the association.

Since joining the OIA in March 2009, Louise Ramsay has been the driving force behind the association, as it starts to deliver against the key objectives outlined in its strategic plan. Under the leadership of Louise and a new board, the OIA has embarked on a wide ranging programme of initiatives designed to better serve, represent and promote the outdoor industries.

Developments have included: significantly enhanced services and cost saving benefits for members; more proactive, regular and consistent communications activity, aligned around a new website; the launch of the OIA conference, which will become an annual event; extensive outreach activity, working with other organisations in the sector to have a louder voice at a national and international level; ongoing sponsorship and support of the annual Innov_ex conference; the launch of The Active Guide website, designed to raise the profile of the specialist outdoor sector within the wider population; and the recent launch of the new Active Retail specialist training scheme through Peoplework.

The OIA’s new structure reflects the increasingly wide and varied range of activity being undertaken by the association. By splitting responsibilities, the association believes that the individuals in each role will be better able to focus on key priorities.

The new chief executive will take charge of the overall strategic direction of the OIA and will focus on areas such as lobbying, membership development and raising the profile of the industry. They will also oversee management of finances and represent the OIA on different industry working groups. In her new role, Louise Ramsay will manage all communications of OIA activities to members, the wider trade and consumers. Louise will continue to develop and manage the website, PR, social media and The Active Guide, while promoting new initiatives such as the Active Retail training programme. She will also organise the annual OIA conferences and the regular CEO and director forums.

Corry Taylor, OIA chair, comments:
“As chief executive, Louise Ramsay has been instrumental in transforming the OIA into a dynamic and ever more effective trade association. The board is very grateful for everything that Louise has achieved, which has inevitably led to this restructure. Dividing the roles and responsibilities will allow the association to maintain, and indeed accelerate, the progress that is already being made. I look forward to continuing to work closely with Louise as she spearheads communications and am confident that we will be presented with some excellent candidates for the vacant chief executive role. It’s an exciting opportunity for an ambitious individual.”

The OIA intends to have a new chief executive in place by September and is now actively seeking suitable candidates.

To find out more about the OIA visit www.oia.co.uk. For further information about the role of chief executive, along with a job description, contact Louise Ramsay on 0131 333 4414 or lramsay@outdoorindustriesassociation.co.uk. Application closing date is 30th June 2011.

Outdoor Industries Association appoints new chief executive

The Outdoor Industries Association (OIA) has announced the appointment of a new chief executive. Andrew Denton will take on the role in September. Denton brings 27 years of industry experience to the OIA and will work closely with communications director Louise Ramsay and the association’s board.

In June, the OIA outlined plans to change its executive structure to reflect the organisation’s evolving role and expanding scope. In the future, the association will be run by a team comprising a part-time chief executive and a part-time communications director, who will continue to be supported by the current membership and administration manager.

Andrew Denton has been working in the outdoor sector since 1984, starting his career in outdoor education and then moved on to a series of senior management and ownership roles in major businesses such as Rohan, Mountain Equipment, Sprayway, The Peaco Group and the Outdoor Sports Company (OSC). He has built up experience in all aspects of running an outdoor enterprise and is well known and well respected within the industry. A keen outdoor activist, Denton is an accomplished mountaineer, mountain biker, ski mountaineer and triathlete. He is a member of the Alpine Club and has undertaken numerous expeditions.

Corry Taylor, chair of the OIA, comments:
“Once we made the decision to restructure the OIA’s executive team, it was essential that we appointed a chief executive with the ability to get on with the job at hand immediately. We received some very high calibre applications, but Andrew was particularly impressive. He outlined his clear understanding of the kind of chief executive that the association now needs, and he also demonstrated very effectively that he is the person who can offer that leadership. Everyone in the interview panel was very pleased to be able to offer Andrew the job and we look forward to working with him soon.”

Andrew Denton adds:
“I am enormously grateful and proud to be offered this role within the OIA. I have spent my whole life outdoors; back packing and camping as a child, working in Outdoor Education and instruction, then having the good fortune to make my living with some wonderful Outdoor brands. Through all that time I have retained a passion for the mountains and wild places so to have this opportunity at the OIA, to help us all grow participation and business in the Outdoors across the UK, it’s my dream job. I am genuinely delighted and looking forward to the challenge!"

Nominate your favourite outdoor charity for the new OIA Outdoor Fund!

We need your help! We want you to nominate your favourite UK outdoor charity for our new OIA Outdoor Fund. At each of our CEO/Directors Forums, we hold a charity raffle in which members raise money for a nominated outdoor charity as a way of putting something back into our industry and to help make the outdoors more accessible at every level. The top three nominated charities will get to be in our OIA Outdoor Fund and benefit from all future fund raising activity. In addition, as a thank you for entering, we’ll also pick a random name out the hat and donate £50 to that cause.

Read some great feedback below from the charities whom have benefited so far from the generosity of our members at the previous charity raffles held at the OIA CEO/ Directors forum:

“Thank you so much to you and the members of the OIA for your donation. As I outlined we are going to use it to launch the Equal Adventure Bursary at the Equal Adventure Lecture on the 27th January 2011. EA works in a number of areas to ensure that adventure is accessible to people with disabilities and your donation is a huge help.”

Suresh Paul, Equal Adventure

“I am writing to acknowledge the generous donation from the Outdoor Industries Association and its members.

Your donation goes straight into our bursary fund that helps disadvantaged and vulnerable young people.
Each year the Lindley bursary funds helps disabled young people access our activities alongside their able bodied peers - as the fund pays for additional instructors to enable them to cave or canoe etc.
The bursary fund also support young peoples groups who cannot fully afford our services due to their backgrounds.

So a huge thank you from everyone at Lindley Educational Trust”

Mark Williams, LET

Please e-mail your nominations to lramsay@theoia.co.uk
New OIA ambassadors prepare to reach out to independent retailers

The Outdoor Industries Association (OIA) has signalled its intent to engage more effectively with the independent retail trade. Chief Executive Andrew Denton has announced the appointment of three ambassadors, whose role will be to build better two way communications between the association and thousands of retailers and other small businesses operating in the outdoor sector.

The OIA’s first three ambassadors will be Nick Anderson, Lee Taylor and Gus Sandeman, all of whom are well established sales agents in the outdoor industry. Between them, Anderson, Taylor and Sandeman have worked with a wide range of brands and deal closely with both multiple and independent retailers on a daily basis. They understand the challenges that the sector faces and are ideally positioned to act as a link between retailers and the OIA.

Andrew Denton comments:
“Nick, Lee and Gus are well acquainted with the history of the OIA, and have seen it at its best and worst. They share our vision and understand why and how a thriving trade association will be good news for everyone in the industry. That knowledge, combined with their jobs, means that they are ideally placed to talk to individual retailers about the work of the OIA. Of course, part of their ambassadorial roles will involve recruiting new members, but our plan is that they will also be the association’s eyes and ears in the field, gathering the news and views that will shape our future activities.

“The OIA central team is small and we are very conscious that at the moment we simply don’t have the resource to proactively contact every one of the thousands of outdoor businesses that exist across the UK. All of them could benefit hugely from joining the association, which is one reason we have introduced the money back guarantee for new members if they don’t recoup costs in their first year as part of the organisation. Nick, Lee and Gus will help us to reach out much more effectively to these businesses.”

Calling all shop managers - be in it to win it!

The OIA is offering all shop managers, walk leaders and any other industry members the chance to get involved with the outdoor industries’ new consumer portal The Active Guide, and be in with a chance to win some fantastic products from leading brands.

What is it?
In a nutshell, The Active Guide aims to encourage greater outdoor participation and drive footfall to local outdoor businesses. It is the new consumer website launched by the not for profit trade organisation Outdoor Industries Association (of which your company is a member). The Active Guide website offers consumers a complete guide to a number of popular outdoor pursuits including walking, cycling, climbing, camping, caravanning and a variety of water sports. Using the site's innovative map based interface, consumers are able to quickly access a database of service providers, activity centres, clubs, retail outlets and much more. In addition, there is a comprehensive range of other editorial content also available to consumers, provided in most cases by you, the great and the good of the outdoor leisure sector.

What do I need to do?
We need more activities and local businesses listed on the map. If you add just 5 new local businesses in your area (e.g. outdoor centre, mountain bike shop, watersports centre, B&B), we’ll enter you into our weekly prize draw and you’ll also qualify for the ‘Big Finale’ prize draw.

Will it take much time (I’m busy!)?
Not at all! Just go to ‘add a new business’ on the map page (www.theactiveguide.com/map) and follow the instructions. Even better, when you’ve done so let that business know and they can upgrade their listing further.

Add your own experiences
You can also share your favourite walks and bike trails by ‘adding an experience’ which will encourage consumers to come to your area and have a go at some outdoor activities.

How do I enter the weekly prize draw?
Just e-mail us at info@theoia.co.uk with your 5 businesses/ activities you’ve listed on The Active Guide map and we’ll enter you into our weekly prize draw. We’ll announce 4 lucky winners randomly drawn each week. And as a ‘Big Finale’ at the end there’ll be a further 4 lucky winners picked from the hat from all entries to date!

What’s in the fantastic prizes pot?

Weekly Prize Draw

Great prizes ranging from Icebreaker Crewe baselayers, Aladdin Challenger Flasks and Ortlieb large rack packs to Berghaus rucksacks and Hi-tec National Trust boots, and The Camping & Caravanning Club instant membership packs with lots in between from other top brands including Petzl and Victorinox.

The Big Finale Prize Draw (12th December)

2 x Mountain Equipment Firefox jackets worth £200 each - groundbreaking GORE-TEX Active Shell fabric is combined with ME's shell expertise to provide the perfect waterproof hardshell for fast moving, done-in-a-day activities

Changes to the OIA board

The Outdoor Industries Association (OIA) has confirmed changes to its board. After two years service, Matthew Eastlake, communications director at the Camping and Caravanning Club and Martin Binnendijk, former CEO of Hi-Tec, are stepping down as they both move on to take up new roles. Meanwhile, the OIA has been able to attract a senior executive to add his experience to the board. Stephen Newlands, managing director of AMG, has been co-opted, bringing with him a wealth of industry experience and business knowledge.

The OIA board now boasts representatives from across the sector - independent retailers (Itchy Feet and Countryside Ski & Climb), multiple retailers (Cotswold Outdoor and Tiso), brands (Berghaus), outdoor holiday organisations (HF Holidays), and distributors (Bradshaw Taylor, Burton McCall, Lyon Equipment and AMG). Along with OIA chief executive Andrew Denton and communications director Louise Ramsay, the board meets regularly and has also set up working groups to ensure that all association plans are delivered in full.

Corry Taylor, chair of the OIA board, comments:
“Matthew and Martin joined the OIA board at a critical juncture two years ago just as the new association was setting out to re-establish its relevance to the industry. Both have made tremendous contributions to the OIA and have been instrumental in helping formulate the strategy which now forms the solid foundation upon which we can move forward with confidence.

“We are delighted to welcome Stephen to the board. He brings substantial and very relevant experience and it is enormously encouraging that the OIA is able to attract such keen interest in getting involved in our work, from senior figures across the industry. We have a very balanced and representative board, which makes the OIA much more capable than in the past of truly representing, and effectively promoting, our sector.”

Stephen Newlands adds:

“I am really pleased to be joining the OIA board at this pivotal time. Andrew’s appointment and the excellent work that Louise Ramsay and the board have already been doing convinced me that the association is certainly going in the right direction and working hard on behalf of its members and the wider industry in these difficult times. I am honoured to be asked to help and am genuinely looking forward to the challenges!”

OIA offers industry insight from China at its 2012 conference

Details of the 2012 Outdoor Industries Association (OIA) conference have been announced. Following the success of the 2011 event, next year’s conference, ‘New Horizons – the changing face of the outdoor industry’, will move to a larger venue in Yorkshire, and will be part of a series of events on 12 and 13 March. The OIA has secured a major keynote speaker for the conference - Roger Zeng, the president and founder of China Outdoor Retailer Association (CORA).

The two day gathering incorporates both the OIA AGM and the conference, and will be hosted by HF Holidays at Newfield Hall in Malhamdale. On 12 March, delegates will have the opportunity to try out a range of outdoor activities in the Malham area. Assorted sponsored athletes and guides from OIA members will be on hand to lead, encourage and instruct in rock climbing, bouldering, hill walking and mountain biking – people working in the industry of all abilities are being encouraged to participate.

The outdoor activities will be followed by the OIA’s formal AGM, then networking and dinner. The conference will take place on the following day and will see a packed programme of speakers, debates and interactive workshops, exploring in detail some of the opportunities and challenges that are facing the outdoor industries in the UK.

Roger Zeng will address the conference, providing delegates with an insight into the Chinese outdoor market, which is growing at over 35% a year and is already the sixth largest in the world. Educated in China and North America, Roger Zeng founded Beijing based distributor Snowpeak and in 2005 set up CORA. He is recognised as a leading authority on the outdoor sector in China and has played a key role in its emergence in recent years.

A second key speaker at the conference will be Mark Held, secretary general and co-founder of the European Outdoor Group (EOG). Mark will be presenting the results and overview of a recent three year project researching what is selling in Europe. The work has involved over 100 brands, across all product group groups and by country. The final report is confidential and only available in full to brands that have participated, so this may be the only chance that many people in the UK market have to see some of the results.

Andrew Denton, OIA chief executive, comments:
“The OIA is delighted to have persuaded Roger Zeng to speak at our annual conference. Roger offers a hugely valuable perspective on the state of the outdoor industry. China has gone from being the factory of the outdoor world to a dynamic and fast growing market opportunity. Meanwhile, China’s home grown brands are developing at an incredible pace and they will not stay at home indefinitely. Roger is an entertaining and informative speaker with a vast knowledge of this changing dynamic and the many new challenges facing the global outdoor industry. We look forward to welcoming him in to the UK in March 2012.

“The data that Mark Held will be talking us through is absolutely vital in helping our industry to understand trends and volumes in key markets. I have been lucky enough to see some of the material that the European Outdoor Group has amassed and it is both highly relevant and extremely impressive. The OIA conference offers an invaluable opportunity to hear about what has been a very effective pan-European project.”

Click here for full details of conference and workshops

Further details of what will be taking place during the two days will be released over the next few months. For more information about the conference contact lramsay@theoia.co.uk.

'A healthier future for Britain'

'A healthier future for Britain'

We’re delighted to announce Dr William Bird MBE will be presenting to the trade at the OIA Conference on the 13th March 2012. William will be discussing the Government and NGO's current initiatives to promote greater activity within our society, as well as looking at what the future holds for our nations’s health. It will also include the introduction to an exciting new initiative currently being developed by the OIA.

Founder of Intelligent Health and author of several research papers which have influenced current thinking on the benefits of outdoor physical activity, William currently advises the UK Government through the Department of Health and DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) on the financial and health benefits of exercising in the natural environment.

Through his role as Strategic Health Advisor at Natural England, William created and launched the Natural Health Service in 2009. He currently Chairs the Physical Activity Alliance and is Senior Lecturer at the Peninsula Medical School.

William set up the world’s first commercial Health Forecasting Unit at the UK Met Office, a system that predicts levels of hospital admissions using atmospheric variables. This work inspired and lead to the creation of the Walking the Way to Health Initiative which promotes the health benefits of group walks and William subsequently launched the Blue and Green Gyms. These three schemes alone have helped over 1 million people become active, just using their local environment.

William was presented with the Health & Social Care Innovation Award in 2006 and the Innovation Doctor of the Year Award in 1996.

In 2009 he was voted by the Independent on Sunday as one of the top 100 people in the UK to make people happy!

William was appointed MBE in January 2010. He is a family GP and practices in Reading.

Cameron McNeish joins the Outdoor Industries Association board

Cameron McNeish joins the Outdoor Industries Association board

Renowned outdoor author and broadcaster Cameron McNeish has joined the board of the Outdoor Industries Association (OIA). McNeish, one of the presenters on The Adventure Show on BBC Scotland and a former editor of TGO magazine, has been co-opted onto the board and will champion a new Independent Outdoor Professional (IOP) membership category. The IOP category is being introduced to ensure that as many people working in the trade as possible can benefit from and get involved in the work of the association.

Following meetings with chief executive Andrew Denton and communications director Louise Ramsay, Cameron McNeish has agreed to play an active role in delivering the OIA’s ambitious plans. Specifically, he will contribute in two key areas: he will help the association to attract more sole traders from the outdoor industry as members, such as commercial sales agents, other journalists, photographers, guides and instructors; he will also use his high national profile to promote the OIA and its aims and objectives to both consumers and government. McNeish will attend the OIA AGM and conference in Malhamdale on 12/13 March, leading a walk on the afternoon of the first day and then being guest speaker during dinner on the same evening.

The IOP membership category is £60 a year and has been designed to appeal to individuals who have previously been unable to access the services, benefits and networking opportunities that the OIA offers. IOP members will be able to access a substantial package of services and benefits, full details of which will be released in the near future.

Cameron McNeish comments:
“I guess it’s a bit of a cliché to say I’m keen to put something back into the industry that has supported me for the past 30 years or so but it’s true. Since standing down as editor of TGO Magazine I realised I had lost contact with the industry, although I’m still working to the same audience, outdoors folk from throughout the UK. This made me realise there are probably many outdoor professionals in the same situation.

“With the new category of membership we hope to bring many more individuals into the fold, and help them enjoy the same benefits as those who are employed by member retailers or manufacturers.”

Andrew Denton comments:
“I am thrilled that Cameron has agreed to join the OIA board. He commands huge respect throughout the industry and shares our passion for promoting active participation in the outdoors. Crucially, Cameron also has the kind of high profile that will help us to reach a broad audience – from the general public to influential politicians – with key OIA messages and campaigns. As a champion of the outdoors and figurehead for the IOP membership category, he fits the bill perfectly. Everyone on the board is looking forward to working with Cameron and it’s fantastic that he has joined in time to play a role at our AGM and conference in March.”

OIA takes its first delegation to ISPO Beijing

OIA is delighted to be taking its first delegation out to ISPO Beijing in conjunction with UK Trade & Investment. The grants have meant that six UK brands will be able to make their debut appearance at the show, appearing alongside other UK exhibitors. The exhibition space and stand will be provided at no cost to the brands, and introductions will be facilitated once there. The brands in the party are OIA members Mountain Equipment, DMM, OMM, Wild Country, Kosi Kidz, Lowe Alpine and Rab.

Corry Taylor, chairman of the OIA, comments:
“For decades, brands from these shores have enjoyed success by exporting products around the world, building not only their own profile but that of the wider UK industry. Indeed, for the long term prosperity of the trade, successful export is essential. As part of its overarching objective to grow the sector, the Outdoor Industries Association works closely with the likes of UK Trade & Investment to support our members as they seek to develop business overseas. China is the fastest growing major outdoor market in the world, so we are delighted to be able to help six UK brands attend ISPO in Beijing and wish them every success at the show.”

The IOP category is being introduced to ensure that as many people working in the trade as possible can benefit from and get involved in the work of the association.

Headed up by renowned outdoor author and broadcaster Cameron McNeish, the new IOP membership category has been designed to appeal to individuals who have previously been unable to access the services, money saving benefits and networking opportunities that the OIA offers.
Cameron McNeish comments:
This made me realise there are probably many outdoor professionals in the same situation.
5 good reasons to attend the OIA 2012 Conference!

OIA chief Andrew Denton speaks to Outdoori on why it's so important not to miss this year's conference

1. What is different about this year’s OIA conference compared to the event in 2011?
By all accounts, last year’s conference was a significant success. Given that it was the first event of its type that the OIA had arranged for some time, there was a good audience and a strong programme. However, I believe that delegates will get even more out of this year’s event. We have put together a really substantial agenda featuring speakers who are at the forefront of different aspects of the industry, along with bespoke practical workshops covering topics that are of real relevance to outdoor businesses. Add in outdoor activities, great networking opportunities and Cameron McNeish as a speaker at the previous night’s dinner, and I think we have an event that will not only be both very informative and enjoyable, but also excellent value for money.

2. You have already mentioned the conference keynote speakers – what makes them so special?
I think each of our keynote speakers offers invaluable insight and knowledge on a topic of great relevance to the whole industry. Roger Zeng brings unparalleled insight into the Chinese outdoor market, the fastest growing in the world; Mark Held will be sharing some extremely important and valuable research data from Europe; and Dr William Bird is at the forefront of the movement to place outdoor activities at the heart of the nation’s health agenda. Having just one of these speakers at the conference should have been enough to sell the event. So, I am delighted that we have all three, and the combination of their different perspectives and areas of expertise gives the OIA conference added weight and relevance.

3. At a UK conference, why is there so much focus on China?
Whether they like it or not, China is going to have a major impact on every outdoor business in the country. Of course, many brands already source product from the far east, but the Chinese outdoor market is now emerging very fast and taking on huge significance in all sorts of ways. Now the sixth largest in the world, the industry over there has been growing at a rate of 35% year on year. China’s domestic brands are also starting to find their feet and turn their attention to potential export markets, which has many implications. And of course, we shouldn’t forget that more Chinese tourists are coming to the UK than ever before, which offers some great opportunities to destinations and outdoor activity providers, if they can find a way to market themselves to those visitors. As well as Roger Zeng’s keynote address, we are delighted to welcome Stewart Ferguson of the China-Britain Business Council, who will lead an afternoon workshop, providing authoritative advice on exporting to China.

4. Are there any other compelling reasons to attend the conference?
Yes, several! It’s my first conference as OIA chief executive. Along with my fellow board members, including some new faces, I am really keen to meet delegates and update the industry about some of the landmark projects that the OIA has in its plans for the next few years. As I hope everyone knows, the association’s overarching aim is to get more of the public into the outdoors and in the process drive people and custom to our members. We are planning an extremely exciting national initiative, working with partner organisations that have a stake in the outdoors. I have already spent time at Westminster, speaking to senior figures in the Government about this very special project and look forward to sharing news of what we have up our sleeves with conference.

If businesses don’t attend, they will be missing out on what I know will be a very rewarding event. Some of the biggest outdoor brands and retailers in the country have already confirmed their places and I am confident that we will have a larger attendance than last year, in the lovely setting of Malhamdale. As I often repeat, this is our collective industry and it will benefit us all if we work together to deliver the overall goals of the OIA. With leaders in the room from all parts of the UK outdoor industry and such a strong agenda, I believe we will look back this year’s conference as a key moment in the OIA’s transition into the highly effective and influential national body that it has been striving to become. I look forward to seeing many of my friends and colleagues in Yorkshire next month.

5. What are the details for anyone interested in attending?
The OIA AGM and conference will be held on 12 and 13 March, and the event is being hosted by HF Holidays at Newfield Hall in Malhamdale, Yorkshire. We’ve arranged for delegates to have the opportunity to try out a range of outdoor activities in the Malham area on the first afternoon. Assorted sponsored athletes and guides from OIA members will be on hand to lead, encourage and instruct in rock climbing, bouldering, hill walking and mountain biking. Later that day, we’ll hold the association’s AGM, followed by a dinner at which author and broadcaster Cameron McNeish will be guest speaker. The conference itself will take place the following day.

HF Holidays have generously offered great rates on accommodation, but there’s also free camping for those who prefer that option, with access to hot showers. Delegates can bring their own tents or borrow one from Vango.

For £55 (or £75 for non members), individuals can participate in the outdoor activities, enjoy a great locally sourced meal (plus wine), be entertained by an excellent speaker, and then attend the conference on the following day. I think that represents outstanding value for money. For those who can’t spare two days, places at just the conference are only £40 for OIA members (£60 for non members). For more information and to make a booking please contact crice@theoia.co.uk.

Full steam ahead to ISPO Beijing for six UK brands.

As previously reported the OIA have managed to facilitate a trade mission trip to ISPO Beijing free of charge for six top UK brands. Details were finalised at ISPO Munich last weekend where Roger Zeng CEO of China Outdoor Retail Association (CORA), the OIA's equivalent in China, met with the brands, ISPO representatives and OIA chief executive Andrew Denton.

The now completed program includes a dedicated UK stand at ISPO Beijing, with a central reception area with assistance for all the brands during the show, business help, and the use of interpreters.

The trip will allow the delegates to get a good understanding of the market and an interactive few days have been laid on on their behalf. After landing the delegates will have a half-day seeing the Great Wall of China, and acclimatizing to the new time zone and temperatures, before meeting with Roger Zeng and several Chinese distributors in the afternoon. The following day, before the stand build up, they will be taken on a retail tour of Beijing to see Tiananmen Square and the nearby 'Silk Market' where many of the sports and outdoor brands are situated. At the top end of the market there are several technical Outdoor Retailers in this area as well and the large department multi- brand stores. Then it’s back to set up the stands, steam samples and work the show! Meetings have been set up in advance, including one with the Nanjing government who are keen to support the newly growing Outdoor industry in China, as well as with retailers who have been contacted by Roger to try and help the brands.

The brands in the party are OIA members Mountain Equipment, DMM, OMM, Wild Country, Kosi Kidz, Lowe Alpine and Rab.

So all in all its a packed program and we wish them a successful and prosperous trip!

Corry Taylor, chairman of the OIA, comments:
“For decades, brands from these shores have enjoyed success by exporting products around the world, building not only their own profile but that of the wider UK industry.
