Minimal Impact - Climbing

Access and conservation go hand in hand and are key elements of the work of the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) in England &Wales and the Mountaineering Council of Scotland (MCofS).

The BMC has produced a code of conduct - the Crag Code - to encourage the sustainable use of crags in England and Wales. The code consists of ten important reminders for people visiting the crags - from respecting the rock and other people to keeping to established footpaths and keeping dogs under control. Whilst the majority of climbers and boulderers have a positive attitude towards crag access and protection, the BMC felt a code was needed to help prevent situations whereby access may come under threat.

Dave Turnbull, BMC Chief Executive, said, “The BMC Crag Code is a simple set of common sense principles. It’s in all of our interests to look after our crags. Whether you're an individual climber, part of a club or running outdoor activity courses, the Crag Code applies to you. Read and respect it.”

BMC Crag Code:

  1. Check the Regional Access Database (RAD) on www.thebmc.co.uk for the latest access information.
  2. Park carefully – avoid gateways and driveways.
  3. Keep to established paths – leave gates as you find them.
  4. Climbing can be dangerous – accept the risks and be aware of other people around you.
  5. Groups and individuals – respect the rock, local climbing ethics and other people.
  6. Do not disturb livestock, wildlife or cliff vegetation; respect seasonal bird nesting restrictions.
  7. Keep dogs under control at all times; don’t let your dog chase sheep or disturb wildlife.
  8. ‘Leave no trace’ – take all litter home with you.
  9. Don’t make a mess – bury your waste.
  10. Do everything you can to support the rural economy – shop locally.
